Navigating Change in Relationships

Changing Relationships

Embarking on a healing journey can sometimes create distance between you and those you love, and that’s completely okay. The friends and family you were closest to before you began focusing on yourself likely shared a similar perspective on life. As you grow and start seeing the world more openly, you can’t expect those around you to change in the same way; in fact, they probably won’t. These friends and family members may continue to view life as they always have, making your conversations feel different because you have changed. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it can be challenging to accept.

This journey can also lead to forming new, more aligned connections with people who understand and support your growth. It doesn’t mean you’ll lose all of your previous connections, but you might find yourself growing closer to new people.

Be patient with yourself and others during this process. When I came home from college and found my mom and I disagreeing more than ever before, my mind initially returned to thoughts like, “I clearly haven’t healed if my mom can make me this angry.” But that’s not the case at all. In our time apart, we had grown into different people, and changes in personality can be hard to adjust to. Just remember that your love for each other is still there, even if you feel disconnected.

Navigating the Shift:

As you navigate these shifting dynamics, remember to communicate openly with those who matter to you. Share your feelings and experiences without expecting them to fully understand or change. Acknowledge the differences and find common ground where possible. It’s also okay to set boundaries where needed, to protect your growth while still honoring your relationships.

Closing Thoughts:

Personal growth is a continuous journey, and it’s okay to experience shifts in your relationships along the way. Embrace the new connections you make and cherish the old ones that still fit into your evolving life. Be kind to yourself and others as you navigate these changes, and trust that this journey is leading you to a more authentic and fulfilling life. Keep moving forward, and celebrate every step of your healing journey.
